Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” Gets A Mega-Mix Thanks To YouTube And Gotye

Gotye knows the last thing you need is another version of his #1 hit “Somebody That I Used To Know”, but if you’re going to contribute a new take on the chart-topping single, go big. The Australian singer has created an impressively comprehensive and intricately edited mash-up, using the hundreds of covers and parodies currently streaming all over the web.

“Reluctant as I am to add to the mountain of interpretations of Somebody That I Used To Know seemingly taking over their own area of the internet, I couldn’t resist the massive remixability that such a large, varied yet connected bundle of source material offered,” Gotye wrote. He even gives credit where credit is due, and provides links to each video on his website.

“As comprehensive and extensive as I tried to be with my downloading of source videos, I know there are many clips that I missed,” he added. “Tay Zonday’s cover for instance, no internet mashup should be without him.” (Clearly, the “Chocolate Rain” guy is hoping to prove his relevance by covering 2012’s biggest hits.)

This mega-mix could have been a hot mess, since each cover artist has their own distinct arrangement of Gotye’s tune. But the singer has an ear for music (obviously), and manages to spin all of these different versions together into one beautifully composed whole. BRB, figuring out how to download this mix and listening to it all day long.
