Sparkle hits theaters this Friday, and its headlining star Jordin Sparks has been riding the movie’s promotional train, showing up at Rockefeller Plaza for an appearance on the Today show this morning (August 14). Five years after being crowned the winner of American Idol at the age of 17, the 22-year-old discussed how she became a part of the movie, saying that the “stars really aligned” for the project. “Everybody was in a place where they could really propel the characters,” she said before going on to call the overall process “nerve-wracking.”

Aside from answering questions about what she found more difficult to do — audition for the movie or perform in front of Simon Cowell — she discussed her late co-star Whitney Houston, who plays her character’s mother in the movie. Sparks remembers Houston as being “intimidating but fun” to work with, and remembered being “devastated” and “shell-shocked” after hearing of her untimely death.
