A pair of action flicks, an animated sci fi movie and a political satire with Will Ferrell wound up being the top draws at movie houses over the weekend, but the Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks musical Sparkle still commanded a respectable $12 million, and opened in fifth place. The film’s budget was around $14 million. And given it’s positive CinemaScore rating (it got an A), Sparkle should have no problem recouping that amount by the time next weekend rolls around.

The weekend’s #1 movie at the box office was The Expendables 2 ($28.7 million), while The Bourne Legacy ($17 million) dropped to #2, ParaNorman ($14 million) debuted at #3 and The Campaign ($13.3 million) fell to #4. So-so reviews may have kept some viewers away from Sparkle, as it currently has a 57% splattered tomato reading at Rotten Tomatoes (though audiences gave it a 75%). Did you go see Sparkle?
