Even though Phillip Phillips“Home” topped the charts and was deemed worthy to be an Olympics anthem, the American Idol Season 11 winner was never completely satisfied with how the song turned out. “I don’t write songs like that,” Phillips said of the Greg Holden and Drew Pearson-penned track. “It’s a very good song and I’m glad people enjoyed it, but I’m itching to do my own stuff.”

He wasn’t kidding. Last night, Phillips debuted a new, original song in front of a Philadelphia radio station audience. Compared to the reassuring, slightly Coldplay-leaning “Home,” “Take Me Away” is a role reversal of sorts, in which he declares, “Loving you is saving me.” And, compared to the songs he performed at his American Idol audition — Stevie Wonder‘s “Superstition” and Michael Jackson‘s “Thriller” — it’s far more subdued and melancholy. That said, what the 21-year-old Leesburg, Ga., writes next is anyone’s guess.
