Florence + The Machine‘s Florence Welch is a theatrical chanteuse with an operatic voice, but any good drama needs some contrasting lightness. So for her first appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Florence gave us both sides. The singer on Wednesday (Sep. 12) performed an alternate take of “Spectrum (Say My Name)” but also joined Fallon for his BP-spoofing song “Balls In Your Mouth.” Choose your own adventure: the drama’s up top, click through for the funny stuff.

The lights were down low for the stripped down version of the Ceremonials track, and with Florence in a black gown she appeared as a power-singing disembodied head. She was backed by a small orchestra, so the tribal thumps of percussion were gone, instead it was just delicate string plucks and that swelling voice.

Before that, though, she had some fun with Fallon’s oil spill song from 2010. And you can see that even when Florence is joking, her voice is deadly serious.
