Kreayshawn’s ‘Somethin’ ‘Bout Kreay’ Is Almost But Not Quite The Worst-Selling Debut Ever

Guess we’ll have to cross Kreayshawn off our Hottest 30 Under List. The “Gucci Gucci” rapstress broke records with her premiere LP, but probably not the records she was aiming for. Somethin’ ‘Bout Kreay has been heralded all over the internet as the worst-selling debut album in music history, and while that’s not exactly true, the numbers are pretty dismal.

There have been plenty of weaker selling albums than Somethin Bout Kreay — though not all of them enjoyed such hype. As the LA Weekly notes, there was the infamous 1999 musical arrival of once-buzzy MTV VJ Jesse Camp, whose debut Jesse & The 8th Street Kidz sold a mere 2,600 copies (in a pre-internet piracy era). And no one could forget the stunning failure of Carly Hennessy, whose 2005 debut Ultimate High sold fewer than 400 copies in its first three months on sale.

What’s surprising about the underperformance of Somethin’ ‘Bout Kreay — who sold just 3,900 copies in its first week — is that Kreayshawn is a fairly popular artist, or she was last year, anyway. “Gucci Gucci” has over 38 million views on YouTube, which is nearly 10,000 times as many views as copies her album sold. That’s a staggering difference, proving that in this day and age, striking while the iron is hot is key. Apparently even die-hard “Gucci Gucci” fans have moved on since last summer. (And that terrible album title couldn’t have helped.)

Anyone out there who actually did buy this album? Let us know below, or on Facebook and Twitter!
