Kendrick Lamar made his television debut on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon Tuesday (October 2), the same show that introduced emerging hip-hop stars like Tyler, the Creator and A$AP Rocky to nationwide audiences. Backed by The Roots, K-Dot performed his lurching ode to liquor “Swimming Pools (Drank),” which appears on his forthcoming album good kid, m.A.A.d city (out October 22). Watch his debut up top.

In case you were unsure about the West Coast MC’s aspirations, he started off with a bit of spoken word verse, saying “I need you to recognize my plan B is to win your hearts before I win a Grammy.” Then he jumped into the song, with ?uestlove providing pitched-down vocals during the refrain. It all sounded especially ethereal in a live setting, and Lamar’s crisp flow cut through the hazy cloud.
