Hurts Preview New Album ‘Exile’ With Dark Video For “The Road”

Two years ago, Hurts gifted fans their delightfully gloomy offering “All I Want For Christmas Is New Year’s Day.” (And Idolator readers even voted it their favorite holiday single of 2010.)  But don’t expect the extremely grim preview clip for new song “The Road” — itself a precursor to the UK duo’s forthcoming sophomore album Exile (out March 11, 2013 in their home country) — to put anyone in the festive spirit.

Theo Hutchcraft‘s sophisticated tenor is still pleasantly tinged with anguish, so nothing’s changed there. But he and duo-mate Adam Anderson‘s instrumentation is more murky than anything on their debut LP Happiness (an ironic title, in retrospect). And then there’s the actual video clip for “The Road,” with its imagery of a frightening angel figure, a creepy, hooded marionnette, shirtless school-aged boys fighting and — is that scenes of S&M we see in the final moments?
