‘American Idol’-Trolling Site “Vote For The Worst” To Close Up Shop After Season 12

If you’ve been watching American Idol every season, then you’re probably big enough of a fan to recognize the site VoteForTheWorst.com. It started in 2004 to drum up votes for those special Idol contestants whom the show’s producers would hate to see advance. You know, people like Sanjaya. Dave Della Terza’s site also came up with the pretty much brilliant campaign to keep voting for “White Guy With Guitar” (the latest being Phillip Phillips, of course).

Sadly, Vote For The Worst is calling it quits after this season. Releasing a statement on the site (read the full post here), Della Terza said “American Idol is really no longer relevant, so VFTW has accomplished our one true goal: making sure that America stops taking American Idol and other singing reality shows seriously…We helped kill American Idol, but even more so, American Idol helped kill itself by refusing to stay relevant.”

VFTW had gained such a following that it became a true thorn in the show’s side, with producers (including Nigel Lythgoe) speaking out against the site. On the flipside, stars like Howard Stern and David Letterman were big fans. Alas, all the bickering and voting shenanigans will come to an end in June.

Speaking about season 12, Della Terza said, “Let’s enjoy it for all it’s worth, and make sure to get the contestants America hates one step closer to winning a meaningless prize. And when our fun contestants go home, let’s make sure we crown White Guy With Guitar #6.”
