Beyonce for the first time is publicly addressing the miscarriage she went through almost two years ago. In her much-anticipated HBO documentary Life is But a Dream, Bey reveals that she and husband Jay-Z had conceived once before Blue Ivy but lost the child. The singer addresses the heartbreaking miscarriage in an emotional moment in the documentary, talking about the first time she heard the heartbeat of her unborn child and calling it “the most beautiful music I ever heard in my life.”

The miscarriage came as a shock to the singer, who had just been to the doctor’s a week before and had already begun picking out baby names. She dealt with the tragedy the only way she knew how: through music. “I went into the studio and wrote the saddest song I’ve ever written in my life,” she explains. “And it was actually the first song I wrote for my album. And it was the best form of therapy for me, because it was the saddest thing I’ve ever been through.”

Jay-Z had previously alluded to the tragedy in “Glory,” his song for Blue Ivy (“Last time the miscarriage was so tragic / We was afraid you’d disappear, but nah, baby, you magic”). But this is the first time Beyonce has openly addressed it. Life is But a Dream premieres on HBO on February 16.
