Academy Awards: When New Songs Happen to Established Musicals

“I Move On” from the film adaptation of Chicago, 2002

This ditty is another one that plays only during the end credits of the film, but “I Move On” doesn’t pull it off quite like “Learn To Be Lonely.” So skip it. It takes more than a minute-and-a-half into the closing credits before the lyrics even hit, and while the music is better than the words — it’s a miss for Velma and Roxie — the Kander and Ebb team could have come up with a closer to really razzle dazzle. Chicago didn’t need this statue anyway; the film was nominated for more than a dozen Oscars (and won the big prize, Best Picture).

Should The Song Have Been Included: Eh.

2004 Best Original Song Oscar Winner: “Lose Yourself” from 8 Mile; Music: Eminem, Jeff Bass and Luis Resto; Lyrics: Eminem
