Charli XCX’s “What I Like” Is What We Like: Listen

Charli XCX has been releasing a steady trickle of singles, videos and mixtapes for the past year or so. Some of the material sounds hyper-polished (e.g. “You’re The One”) and some sounds decidedly DIY (e.g. “Cloud Aura”), but it all has the same Charli sensibilities: earnest lyrics of love and an unconventional meld of synthyTumblr-pop sonics with radio-friendly melodies. Her forthcoming debut True Romance is just weeks away (out April 16), and new single “What I Like” bodes well for the project.

It’s right in her wheelhouse, keeping intact the slinky intimacy and rough edges that made her mixtapes so compelling. Rather than becoming a Frankenstein monster built of too many commercial aspirations and big-budget studio tricks, Charli XCX stuck to her (lipstick) guns for this album, and that’s exactly what we like. Hear the new song after the jump.
