Lauryn Hill’s “Neurotic Society Compulsory Mix”: Hear Her New Song

Even before Lauryn Hill released her stunning debut, 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the Fugees recognized her potential as a solo performer. “The lethal weapon we had was Lauryn,” Fugees member Pras once said to XXL. “She added a dynamic that no one had seen: a girl who looked good, could sing, could rap. No one had that.”

Although Miseducation is the only studio album to her name, a new song shows that Hill still bears talent that very few possess. In “Neurotic Society Compulsory Mix,” she doesn’t coax a melody out of her verses, as much as she spits artillery fire of TV screens, Facebook, a “vampire paradigm,” the sense that she’s always being watched. For years Hill cited threats to her family and herself as the reasons why she’s retreated (and yes, not paid her taxes). On Saturday, after she inked a deal with Sony to launch her new label Observe Creation Music, Hill says she was “required” to release “Neurotic Society” immediately. “I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music,” she wrote on Tumblr.

Hill may not have felt ready, but in “Neurotic” she proves that she’s as lethal as we remember.
