Lorde’s “Tennis Court”: Hear The Teenage Prodigy’s Latest Stunner

It must feel unfair to the competition that someone like Lorde is out there: The 16-year-old singer-songwriter from New Zealand is churning out tunes that are genuinely incomparable. After dropping her brilliant single “Royals” this spring, she’s followed it up with “Tennis Court,” another flawlessly produced track that hits a perfect stride between swagger and vulnerability.

A little ambient, with likably chopped-and-screwed vocal elements, wobbly instrumentation and a skittering backbeat, “Tennis Court” features her strongest hook to date: “Baby be the class clown / I’ll be the beauty queen in tears,” she sings on the chorus. It’s a striking and immediate melody that just augurs more good things to come when her next EP, The Tennis Court EP, drops via Virgin on July 22.

Listen below.
