Robin Thicke Lands #1 Single: Just Call 2013 The Year Of The Comeback

Mariah Carey. Justin Timberlake. Daft Punk. Miley Cyrus. Just some of the artists who are back in a big way and riding the pop chart wave in a year where, really, anything goes. (See the oddball, though surely short-lived, success of Baauer‘s Hot 100-topping single “Harlem Shake” or the rise of the unsigned Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.) Now add Robin Thicke to the list, thanks to his T.I.– and Pharrell Williams-assisted funk-pop jam “Blurred Lines.”

Last week the song bounded into the Hot 100’s Top 10, at #6, and this week it makes the jump all the way up to #1, thus giving the axe to Macklemore’s five-week reign with “Can’t Hold Us.” This is a sweet turn of events for fans of Thicke lamenting the notion that Justin Timberlake stole Robin’s swag with The 20/20 Experience, given that JT’s “Mirrors” (which came close to topping the chart last week, in the runner-up position), has now dropped to #4.

Prior to “Blurred Lines,” Thicke’s biggest American hit to-date — not to mention, his only other Top 40 single — was 2007’s “Lost Without U.” But the US isn’t the only area where Robin is finding himself king these days; “Blurred Lines” has already conquered the Australian and Canadian charts, plus those in much of Europe (including the UK, France and Germany).

All of this is to say that 1.) who knows, maybe Kat Deluna, Ashanti and Ciara will be the next ones to slay the airwaves and make Billboard their bitch this year, and 2.) all is boding well for Robin Thicke’s upcoming Blurred Lines album (out July 30).

And, speaking of albums:
