MGMT Announce Self-Titled Album, September Release Date

Good news for those who found that MGMT‘s 2010 sophomore effort Congratulations made for better Trapper Keeper art than a decent listening experience: The pair just announced their self-titled follow-up album, which is due out September 17. Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser once again worked with Oracular Spectacular co-producer David Fridmann, on the 10-song set.

The LP is described in a press release as “a diverse and powerful collection of 10 songs (including a cover of ‘Introspection’ by 1960’s psych band Faine Jade) that directly mirrors the duo’s encompassing surrealist view of the everyday.” So there you have it — an indication that this may just end up sounding more Congratulations than “Kids.”

Anyway, below you can catch the MGMT tracklist, plus recent Record Store Day teaser track “Alien Days,” itself probably a fair barometer as to the feel of the full album. (It is, after all, prominently placed as the first song on this whole shebang.)
