Little Boots, Nocturnes Released: May 7

UK disco darling Little Boots first set our hearts ablaze four years ago with her debut record, Hands. But between the pressure of the much-hyped BBC Sound of 2009 win, major label demands and megawatt super-producers being pulled in to produce for her follow-up, the singer-songstress decided to take some time away to clear her head and refocus her sound to avoid the sophomore slump. The result was her spectacular Nocturnes in May, a collection of lush tunes best played just after the stroke of midnight. It’s an incredibly cohesive set, full of deep disco pulsations and light, joyous melodies including “Motorway,” “Broken Record” and the infuriatingly catchy “Shake.” And while the album may not have as many radio friendly, three-minute pop bangers as its predecessor, Nocturnes feels infinitely more authentic, playing like a special late night love letter to the dance floor. — BRADLEY STERN
