Demi Lovato’s “Heart By Heart”: Preview The New Ballad

Yesterday saw news that Demi Lovato would be contributing a song to the soundtrack for the upcoming film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, due out August 20 — and now we already have a preview of the track. Fancy that!

Unless they were penned specifically for the film (like much of the Gatsby soundtrack), movie songs are often just tracks that didn’t make the album, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to learn that was the case with Lovato’s “Heart By Heart,” a big, conventional ballad that fits nicely alongside songs like “Nightingale” from her last LP Demi (although “Heart By Heart” may not be quite as good). It’s just Lovato’s voice and a piano backing until the chorus, which then turns soaring and cinematic; she really gets to belt on the penultimate lyric in the refrain, that “Your love lifts me out of time,” and it’s a properly huge moment.

Overall, though, it feels like, well, a movie ballad. It’s no “Skyscraper.” (But then again, what is?)

Listen to a one-minute snippet below.
