Justin Timberlake performed his new song “Take Back the Night” Friday night at the Yahoo! Wireless festival, less than a day after he premiered it on YouTube. When JT introduced the song, he acted as if the crowd likely hadn’t heard heard or embraced it just yet. He asked whether people was ready for something new, “like banging, spanking new?” Then, as if the response mattered, he shrugged. “Okay.”

In actuality, much of Timberlake’s “Take Back the Night” performance felt familiar. Already, the 20/20 Experience — 2 of 2sounds like a disco-lite version of Justified‘s “And She Said (Take Me Now).” (Pay close attention to the vocal arrangements.) The ever-charismatic Timberlake strolled across the London festival stage while backed by the Tennessee Kids, and in front of a glowing backdrop simulating theater curtains. On stage, he had created a neon version of his “Suit & Tie” days from only a few months back.

Make no mistake: “Take Back the Night” is indeed a new Justin Timberlake song. Still, the crowd felt inspired to sway and clap because of its easy appeal.
