2013 MTV Video Music Awards: Justin Timberlake, Macklemore, Bruno Mars Lead Nominations

The dudes are dominating at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, as nominations were rolled out earlier this morning. Leading the pack are Justin Timberlake and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who each snagged six nods — and they’re going head to head for the big award, Video Of The Year. Trailing them is Bruno Mars, who received four nominations, while Pink, Robin Thicke, Thirty Seconds to Mars and Miley Cyrus each received three.

It does feel like the right videos were nominated (it would be hard to argue with Timberlake’s “Mirrors” being honored, and “Blurred Lines” is probably the splashiest clip of the year), but doesn’t it feel like there’s a dearth of ladies represented here in, like, every category? And for that matter, while I think Taylor Swift is phenomenally gifted, how anyone could argue that “I Knew You Were Trouble” deserves its space on this list more than Lana Del Rey‘s “Ride” (which only gets a Best Cinemography nod, even though “Trouble” kinda swagger-jacked it) is utterly beyond me.

Still, a few things about this are definitely right: It’s fantastic to see Miley Cyrus honored for her exceptionally weird “We Can’t Stop” video, and if Ciara doesn’t win Best Choreography for her phenomenal “Body Party” video, I’m going to throw a temper tantrum.
