Hockey’s “My Mind” Remixed By Penguin Prison: Idolator Premiere

Portland-bred, Brooklyn-based Hockey have returned with their new album Wyeth Is, and it’s full of lovingly crafted lo-fi indie pop. The LP is more relaxed than “Too Fake” and much of the other fare from 2009’s Mind Chaos, with Ben Wyeth’s slightly weary vocals mixing with analog bleeps and bloops to evoke a sort of mini-scale Peter Gabriel.

This framework makes the tracks especially amenable to remixing, and standout track “My Mind” got a remix from fellow New Yorker Penguin Prison, which we’re premiering today. In Chris Glover’s deft hands, the low-key funk of the original has been poured over a lean four-on-the-floor beat and ping-ponging synths. Then everything gradually builds up into a neon dancefloor workout, creating an interesting juxtaposition with Wyeth’s hypnotically calm vocals.

Head below to hear the remix and to check out the remainder of Hockey’s summer tour dates.
