Fiona Apple asked ex-boyfriend Paul Thomas Anderson to direct her “Hot Knife” video (he helmed a number of her previous clips) and it’s still a match made in heaven. At least, artistically. The auteur behind films like Magnolia and Boogie Nights taps into the song’s multi-layered vocals and quirky production effortlessly — using split screens, subtle color changes and a tight close-up of the mysterious singer’s expressive face to convey the passion of the Idler Wheel highlight. This is a great example of a simple concept executed flawlessly. While Fiona will never top the epic bathtub shenanigans of “Criminal”, this comes close.
