MDNGHT’s ‘Into The Night’ EP: Dreamy, Impeccable Disco House

I championed Manchester-based electro outfit MDNGHT back when they dropped their first single “I Will Lead You On,” but with today’s premiere of their debut EP, Into The Night, they’ve distinguished themselves as the ones to beat when it comes to this particular brand of ’90s-referencing, lushly produced house. Surging effortlessly from a Justin Timberlake falsetto into surprisingly soulful vocals, MDNGHT’s sound is velvety and sweet with a haunting edge, most of all on the title track, which is sexy but aching, glittering synths and an almighty pop chorus. “Give Your Love” has an urgency that’s gripping, while “Way Too Far” feels like being lulled into hypnosis.

Almost uniformly I favor female vocalists over male ones on dance music — there’s just something about a diva who can sang — but it’s no exaggeration to say that, vocally, MDNGHT has my favorite frontman in the game. Jordan Lewin‘s voice is evocative, emotive and compulsively replayable. Dance to it; drive to it; cry to it; whatever. Into The Night is streaming now over at The Guardian.
