Sure, Mutya Keisha Siobhan Are Back, But What About The Other Sugababes?

Mutya Keisha Siobhan have risen from the ashes of Sugababes to form what’s arguably the most promising English girl group in the game right now — but whatever happened to the band we still call Sugababes, which went through a series of line-up changes and is now, in its fourth incarnation, comprised of of Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen?

Good question! It would be great if the girls themselves could agree, but alas — that doesn’t seem to be in the cards, especially after the underperformance of their first LP in that lineup, Sweet 7, and inexplicable follow-up single “Freedom.”

To wit: Jade Ewen (the new girl, the neophyte, the Cady Heron, if you will) told Digital Spy that she doesn’t know “if the band stuff is going to happen again,” describing Sugababes as “pretty much done.” Oh, Jade. You haven’t yet learned the evasion tactics of the ‘Babes. “I’m working on solo material at the moment, actually. It’s only come about in the past three weeks, so it’s quite a new project. No one’s really seen me yet. I sang for Eurovision, I’ve been in a band, but I don’t think anyone really knows what I’m about.”

But in short order, Amelle (the Gretchen Wieners, let’s face it) contradicted Jade’s claim of a de facto split: “I’m still in touch with Heidi and Jade,” she said. “Me and Heidi are really close – we always have been. I’m really happy for her, she’s really happy. Same with Jade, she’s cool — she’s just got back from holiday. We’re thinking of getting back together at the end of next year. I’m currently promoting this single now, then my own album. Hopefully after that we can rebuild and see what we’re going to do.”

And yet, it’s hard not to read Amelle’s assessment of Jade as “cool” as girl group parlance for “a horrible monster with whom I’ll never work again.” Watch your wig, Jade.

The good news? “Flatline.” That’s the good news.
