Teen Choice Awards 2013: Review Revue

The 2013 Teen Choice Awards were a whirlwind, with the number of categories rivaled only by the number of onscreen hashtags, all of it somehow crammed into an economical two-hour broadcast. There were a few highlights throughout the night, from the silly (Rebel Wilson‘s wetsuit) to the inspirational (Ashton Kutcher‘s speech), but it was Lea Michele‘s first public appearance since the July death of boyfriend Cory Monteith that stole the show. Her acceptance speech/tribute was truly touching, made more so considering how out of place it felt at the surfboards-and-screams extravaganza.

Head below for our review revue to see what the bloggerati said about that moment and more at the TCAs.

:: Us Weekly ranked Michele’s speech as the top moment, but also highlighted the “memorable” performances by One Direction and Demi Lovato, as well as Selena Gomez‘s double-slit dress.

:: Glamour touted Michele’s “raw, emotional tribute” to Monteith, and their blogger also enjoyed 1D’s fun performance, but had one gripe: “Gosh, I wish they danced.”

:: Direct Lyrics have a theory for the lack of dancing on 1D’s part: “The guys looked super tired. They had just finished a four-night concert streak in L.A., and probably all they wanted to do was rest.”

:: Entertainment Weekly‘s PopWatch handed out some awards of their own, including one for Demi’s neo-mullet, Nick Jonas‘ tank top and Miley Cyrus‘ dad (presumably because he was dressed like a 26-year-old food truck owner).

:: E! felt the “biggest bummer” of the show was that Nick Jonas never took his shirt off.

:: The Mirror summed up the proceedings thusly: “While arguably it was Harry Styles who stole the show with his sexy twerk dance moves, it was Lea Michele’s emotional tribute to late boyfriend Cory Monteith that will always be remembered.”
