Well! While Katy Perry is out pounding the pavement in a gold truck promoting her new single “Roar,” her on-again off-again boyfriend John Mayer has his own album to plug — and now the entirety of Paradise Valley is streaming today. What a gift!
One highlight from the album? “Who You Love,” a twangy, swoony soft rock midtempo featuring Perry on vocal duties — and far from the powerhouse performance she turns out on “Roar,” she’s all sweet restraint here, complementing Mayer’s honeyed vox nicely and channeling Kelly Clarkson in the best of ways.
No matter how frequently he indulges his douchebaggiest impulses, Mayer remains an excellent songwriter, and the simplicity and elegance of “Who You Love” shines through the production, which feels a little drippy. Then again, so is he.
