White Prism — “Fool”: Idolator Premiere

White Prism is the work of Australia-born, New York City-based Johanna Cranitch, who combines spacey synths with breezy vocals to create an effortless, hypnotic brand of electro-pop. Her songs are remarkably spectral and calm; they don’t so much end as they dissipate into a pastel mist. And so we’re excited to premiere White Prism’s latest offering, the crystalline “Fool.”

At first it’s a placid affair, with Johanna’s voice traipsing above a lovely wash of synths as she laments “I’m chasing you again / Like a fool I want to pretend.” But it gradually builds into a multi-layered loop by the end, exposing the stark emotions that were bubbling underneath. “I was listening to a bit of Paula Abdul and Mariah Carey‘s first record when I wrote this,” Cranitch said. “I guess it’s about unrequited love. That vibe you get into where you like someone so much that you just stare at the phone hoping they’ll call, but you can’t call them because you don’t know how they really feel about you.”

“Fool” was produced by Josh Ascalon, who has worked with Das Racist and Chairlift, and Johanna says it was recorded almost exclusively using analog synths. Give it a listen below.
