The Weeknd has slowly but surely stepped out from the shadows over the last two years, culminating with his first-ever interview earlier this year and a full-fledged tour and promotional campaign tied to his commercial debut, Kiss Land. On Thursday (September 12), his unveiling continued, as Abel Tesfaye made his US television debut with “Pretty” on Jimmy Kimmel Live (the singer previously played the UK’s Later… with Jools Holland).

After the host introduced him, the crowd burst into one of the louder roars I remember hearing for a talk show performance outside of, like, One Direction on Ellen or something. Tesfaye didn’t savor it, getting right into the tale of life on the road, and returned the emotion in kind, giving the slow-builder a jolt of intensity by the end. Peep the sick percussion, too.
