The influence of Motown is evident on Janelle Monae‘s critically-acclaimed The Electric Lady (listen to “It’s Code” and “PrimeTime”), so it’s only fitting that the 27-year-old recorded a track from the hallowed label’s glory days. She settled on covering The Jackson 5‘s “I Want You Back”, which you can find on the exclusive Target edition of the album.
It’s definitely worth a trip to the retail giant to get your hands on Janelle’s cover. Her smooth voice is a perfect fit for the material and she delivers an effortlessly beautiful rendition that stays true to the original but still feels very much her own.
