8. Laura Welsh

Laura Welsh is yet another London product on this list, proving London town and Los Angeles are dominating the underground R&B game right now. Welsh uses her rich voice to counterbalance the hollowed-out sound of muted guitars and synths squiggling in the distance on songs like “Cold Front” and “Unravel.” For the latter track, producer Dev Hynes harnessed the sexy, intimate sound he employed successfully with Solange and Sky Ferreira in the past.

Welsh aimed for something bigger on her latest single, “Undiscovered,” by enlisting Emile Haynie to produce. His resultant arrangement offers a heftier sound, buttressing Hynes’ micro-pop on the verses (Dev and Welsh co-wrote the song) with a rhythmic stomp and soaring chorus. This radio-ready direction pretty much assures she won’t be undiscovered much longer.
