Miley Cyrus Responds To Sinead O’Connor’s Open Letter In The Worst Way

Oh, Miley.

To recap: The Irish singer Sinead O’Connor, known for her blockbuster oft-covered single “Nothing Compares 2 U” (itself a cover of Prince‘s original) posted an open letter to Miley Cyrus yesterday — a well-intentioned but largely misguided manifesto with a lot of unintentional slut-shaming advising her to be mindful of her role in the industry, specifically with respect to the sexualization of her image. (You can read it here.)

All was quiet on Miley’s front for a few hours, until she posted this on Twitter.

The implication, of course, being that Sinead O’Connor is crazy.

There are a few problems with this: The first is the reference to notorious Twitter lunatic Amanda Bynes, who’s currently undergoing inpatient mental health treatment; dropping her name in this context is a cheap shot that undercuts the gravity of the actual mental illness with which Bynes is struggling. Not a particularly sensitive move.

But the bigger problem is that the screencapped tweets aren’t even from Sinead O’Connor’s current Twitter feed; O’Connor’s rep says that she doesn’t even use Twitter (although the tweets were previously reported to be O’Connor’s). Miley’s supposed evidence isn’t even credible, which just makes her look worse.

The whole thing is an ugly mess, and while O’Connor definitely invited ire with the tone and content of her letter, this definitely isn’t the way to respond. Boo hiss, Miley. Next time — take the high road.
