Justin Bieber shows some vulnerability and sincerity in a new clip from his upcoming Believe documentary, which hits theaters on Christmas. Sitting in a hotel room, the star discusses the emotional toll of always being in the spotlight, and explains how even when he’s down he must put on a happy face when it comes time to perform. (This is the part where you assume he’s talking about his breakup with Selena Gomez.)

“You always gotta keep a smile on your face. Through all the negativity. You gotta hide your emotions sometimes,” the singer reveals. It’s a more empathetic approach than the one he took at the Billboard Music Awards, where he blasted the haters and talked about focusing on the “craft.” Luckily, he’s been a busy little Bieber this fall to help distract him from any negativity: in addition to the film, he’s currently in the midst of rolling out 10 new songs and another fragrance.
