Lorde’s “Royals” Remixed By Rick Ross: Listen

If you thought The Weeknd‘s remix of Lorde‘s “Royals” was unexpected, then your brain may not be able to process the fact that the song’s latest reinterpretation comes at the blinged-out hands of Rick Ross. The bellowing Maybach Music boss chopped up the song and threw a verse into the middle. It’s a highly ironic pairing, since the track rails against pop’s conspicuous consumption, while Rozay’s entire career is built on flaunting the lavish life of a (fake) drug kingpin. I mean, she says “Maybach” in the song, for God’s sake! We’re sure Lorde herself will have something to say about this on Twitter soon.

While the dueling “Funkmaster Flex” and “Maybach Music” drops obliterate the track’s mystery and elegance, the fact that this happened at all is a testament to the widespread appeal of “Royals.” It’s alt, it’s bass music, it’s hip-hop, it’s social commentary… but it’s so masterfully executed that in the end, it’s just damn good pop, and you can enjoy it without consciously focusing on any of those characteristics.

Hear the MMG version below.

Lorde — “Royals” (Rick Ross remix)

This is Rozay’s second surprising remix in recent days, following his reworking of Drake‘s soft-focus hit “Hold On, We’re Going Home.”
