Lorde Covers Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”: Listen

Good Lorde! The chart-topping “Royals” songstress has turned out a brand-new song on the heels of her Pure Heroine release — a cover of Tears For Fears‘ 1985 single “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” — as a contribution to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack, where she joins such fine company as Christina Aguilera and Sia (and also, Christina Aguilera — and did I mention Christina Aguilera?).

Unsurprisingly, Lorde’s rendition of the song is haunting and melodramatic, as dark and apocalyptic as you’d expect from the singer — and given the doom-and-gloom vibe of the other contributions to the soundtrack unveiled so far, she’ll fit in nicely.

Don’t be surprised if the song reinvigorates Tears For Fears much in the way that Gary Jules‘ cover of “Mad World” from the Donnie Darko soundtrack did a decade ago.
