3. Out from Under

“Out From Under”: The Britney song that wasn’t exactly a Britney song. The song was originally recorded by Joanna Pacitti for the Bratz: The Movie soundtrack…but since no one would actually see that movie or listen to the soundtrack, Brit’s camp was able to snag it for inclusion on Circus.

After the brazenly sassy “Womanizer” and the deliciously throbbing pulse of “Circus”, “Out from Under” was the album’s first ballad — and a powerful one at that. It was the emotional touch of Brit’s reality that was noticeably missing from Blackout. A moment that reminded us that underneath Britney’s fierce, sex-kitten persona was a woman who, like most of us, isn’t impermeable to heartbreak.

By the time we made it to the first chorus, the song’s history didn’t matter. This was Britney singing her heart out and we felt her pain with every single word. It’s the type of vulnerability we hadn’t seen from Britney since “Everytime,” you know — the Britney ballad of ALL Britney ballads.

If we’re being perfectly honest with ourselves, “Out From Under” is more along the lines of the PersonalNEY we expected from Britney Jean — but that’s an entirely different story.
