Lorde Rules The World In Her Video For “Team”: Watch

“Royals” may still be ubiquitous, but Lorde is shifting her focus onto new single “Team,” which is good because “Royals” has grown exhausting and “Team” still sounds nice and fresh — so the release of her “Team” video feels fortuitously timed.

But what does it all mean, in this video? It’s not entirely clear! The clip, which was shot in Red Hook, Brooklyn, has some vaguely sinister sequences involving teens in a kind of enclave with Lorde, and there’s a lot of water imagery and some palm fronds, and that’s probably all you really need to know.

Alternately, let Lorde explain this video to you in her own words, with the Lorde-iest statement that Lorde has ever made:

This video was born from a dream I had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was queen. I dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. And of this world, I dreamt about tests that didn’t need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger.

I’ll take it. Watch “Team” up top.
