Despite some very shaky reviews, NBC’s live staging of The Sound Of Music last night (December 5) garnered huge ratings for the network. The three hour special averaged 18.5 million viewers, due in no small part to the huge fanbase of star Carrie Underwood, who took on the lead role of Maria von Trapp.

The broadcast peaked with 19 million viewers in the 9 p.m. hour, according to Variety, and the 7.0 rating in the female 25-54 demographic helped the musical beat out CBS’s Thursday night juggernaut The Big Bang Theory. It was NBC’s biggest non-sports Thursday since the ER finale in 2009.
