R. Kelly‘s return to prominence has been one of 2013’s oddest success stories. Unexpected features and sexually charged tunes caught everyone’s attention but his formidable talent is why most of us are — low key — happy to have him back. Not convinced? Look no further than the R&B icon’s moving tribute to Nelson Mandela on last night’s (December 5) The Arsenio Hall Show.

The 46-year-old sat down at the piano to perform “Soldier’s Heart” — a gentle ballad, which he once performed for the great humanitarian. It’s a simple, moving tribute. “He stood on the front line, he lead the way out of the darkness,” Mr. Kelly sings. “He didn’t let us go astray.” Watch up top.
