Beyonce Becomes First Female To Top Chart With First Five Studio Albums
As was foretold, Beyonce‘s out-of-nowhere, self-titled fifth album has now become her fifth studio set to top the Billboard 200, thus making King B the first female pull off such a feat. (The boys in the club, in case you’re wondering, are DMX and the Kingston Trio.) Beyonce also has the distinction of having had all five of her albums debut in the top spot (DMX is the only other artist to do so, according to Billboard).
Beyonce wound up selling 617,000 copies between Friday and Sunday last week — a record for both Beyonce and the iTunes store, which is the only retailer that has the LP for sale. (That will all change as physical copies of the album arrive at stores — well, except for Target — over the next couple days).
Alas, Bey still places fourth as far as largest opening week sales in 2013, behind Justin Timberlake‘s The 20/20 Experience (968,000), Eminem‘s The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (792,000) and Drake‘s Nothing Was The Same (658,000). Those albums, of course, had the benefit of each being on sale for a full week before Sunday’s chart cut-off time.
Billboard also points out that Beyonce is now the second digital-only release to top the Billboard 200, following the charity compilation Help For Haiti Now in 2010.
So, anyway, all of this is to say…BEYONCE.
