The year’s most talked-about acts dominated Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Robin Thicke sang “Blurred Lines.” Macklemore tossed his own red sneakers into the crowd as he and Ryan Lewis performed “Thrift Shop,” as if to drive home his own lines about rejecting $50 t-shirts. Curiously, Miley Cyrus chose to sing “#GETITRIGHT” instead of new single “Adore You.” And strangely, Pharrell (“#GETITRIGHT” producer, “Blurred Lines” guest, GQ‘s “Hitmaker of the Year”) popped up but didn’t perform.

“We like New Year’s Rockin’ Eve to be a review of the year in music,” producer Barry Adelman said to Billboard. If so, the special presented a tame and family-friendly roundup, free of the hand-wringing and click-baiting antics that its headliners caused throughout 2013. Well, almost: As Cyrus belted no-brainer “Wrecking Ball,” co-host Jenny McCarthy decided to taste a sledgehammer for herself. Meanwhile, the BANGERZ star wore a weed leaf earpiece throughout, and she kissed co-host Ryan Seacrest when the ball dropped, a moment that Rockin’ Eve failed to air but she succeeded in posting online.
