Disney’s ‘Frozen’ Sountrack Appropriately Tops Polar Vortex Week Album Chart

The country has been dipped into a deep, Arctic freeze, so chalk it up to serendipity that the album to bump Beyonce off the top of the Billboard 200 in this week of the Polar Vortex is the soundtrack to Disney’s Frozen. In addition to being a big draw at theaters — Box Office Mojo shows Frozen‘s receipts standing at over $298 million, to-date — the soundtrack song “Let It Go,” performed in the movie by Idina Menzel but tweaked for radio with a version by Demi Lovato, is up for Best Original Song at this coming weekend’s Golden Globe Awards. The soundtrack sold 165,000 copies last week.

Billboard goes on to point out that Frozen is only the fourth animated film to land a soundtrack at the top of the main album chart, following The Lion King in 1994, Pocahontas in 1995 and Curious George in 2006.

As for Beyonce, don’t feel too bad about her fifth album (130,000) dropping to #2 — it’s now sold more in four weeks (1.43 million) than the diva’s previous album 4 has since its release in 2011.

In keeping with the impressive nature of Bey’s latest, it was also recently reported that the album managed to scrape into the Top 10 of 2013’s best-selling albums, with only three weeks of availability under its belt.
