Macklemore Texted Kendrick Lamar After Grammy Win: “You Got Robbed”

Leading up to the Grammys, Macklemore told The Source in no uncertain terms that “Kendrick has a better rap album” and therefore good kid, m.A.A.d city deserved to win Best Rap Album over The Heist. But at the Grammy Awards last night (January 26), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis took the trophy over Kendrick Lamar, and even after holding the hardware, Mack thinks it was the wrong choice. And he texted Kendrick to tell him.

“You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have,” Macklemore wrote to Lamar. ” It’s weird and it sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started playing during my speech and I froze.” It’s also weird that Macklemore Instagrammed this text for the public, but also he’s right. In the caption for the post, the Seattle MC reiterated “in that category, [Kendrick] should have won IMO.”

My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album… I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that’s taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it’s proper respect.”

You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and it sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started playing during my speech and I froze. Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and as a friend. Much love.”
