Britney Spears Covers ‘Vegas’ Magazine, Talks ‘Piece Of Me’ Residency
Britney Spears talks of leading a normal life in the latest issue of Vegas, despite appearing as a larger-than-life rock star on its cover (above). Ahead of opening night of her Planet Hollywood residency Piece of Me, she sounded relieved to have a somewhat regular schedule in order to spend time with her kids. (“I will have some nights where I’ll come back to LA after the show and some when I’ll stay over in Las Vegas,” she says to writer Heidi Mitchell.)
Spears also sounded eager to start, although not for reasons that fans might expect. “I’ll be really nervous on the first night,” she says. “I’m older, obviously, and I think I’m probably a little bit wiser, but I’m way less fearless. I can’t wait for the first night to be over and move on to the next show.”Turns out, Piece of Me is far more than just a show to Las Vegas. When it opened on December 27, guests like Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and Adam Lambert were in attendance, perhaps the most outstanding proof that Caesars Entertainment had aligned its tastes with Sin City’s increasingly younger demographic, the average age falling from 50 in 2009 to 44.8 in 2012. (Caesars earns about $500,000 per sold-out night, according to Vegas.)
Vegas also pinpoints an added bonus: an ever-changing setlist. “The beauty of this show is that it’s Britney past, present, and future,” says show director Baz Halpin (Taylor Swift, Pink). “She performs 21 hits from her entire career, but we’ve left it fluid enough that over the course of the residency, as tracks are released from her new album, Britney Jean, new songs will be added. That was the key. So if you come in December and come back in July, you’ll have a different show.”
