Big Boi Upgrades “CPU” With Help From Sade: Listen

OutKast‘s Big Boi has updated one of his newest songs with help from a 1988 single. “CPU 2.0” is a smoothed-out, reworked version of “CPU,” one of many Phantogram collaborations featured in Big Boi’s second album, 2012’s Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumors.

It’s also a mash-up featuring Sade‘s “Nothing Can Come Between Us.” And it works.

Big Boi had released Vicious Lies to one recurring criticism — most of his forays into electrorock and psychedelia, courtesy of bands like Phantogram, Little Dragon and Wavves, simply didn’t gel. (While not bad, the glinting “CPU” does force Big Boi to reckon with Phantogram’s Sarah Barthel as if she was Siri, which only has him sounding wearier from the Information Age because of it.) With help from a funky bass and Sade’s reassuring hook, though, Big Boi actually sounds revitalized in “2.0.”

While promoting Vicious Lies, Big Boi — or Daddy Fat Saxx, or Sir Lucious Left Foot, oh great one either way — said that he’d love to work with Sade someday. Until then (and it should), he will be releasing reworked versions of Vicious Lies tracks weekly, as he plots a new solo album and preps for OutKast’s massive reunion tour. For now, check out “CPU 2.0” after the jump.
