Major Lazer Drops “Aerosol Can” Ft. Pharrell: Listen

The moral of Major Lazer‘s new song? Pharrell can rock any kind of party, period.

“Aerosol Can” is the first single off Major Lazer’s next EP Apocalypse Soon, out February 25. When the dancehall DJ cues a hollow rhythm, and then a thumping bass, Pharrell scopes out the clubs and packs his bouncy verses with one pop culture reference after another.

“In the club, everybody on Sinatra / look around, everybody on Sinatra,” he raps, as if recalling Justin Timberlake‘s “Suit & Tie” return to pop. He mimes choppers as if he’s recently heard Future lose his “Sh!t” recently. “Monkey outside,” he raps a split second later, what feels like a sly nod to Malcolm McLaren‘s “Buffalo Girls” (like his winning Grammy hat) and Harry Belafonte‘s “Monkey” at the same damn time.

Given how Pharrell was one of 2013’s biggest hitmakers, donning suits like Sinatra one moment and swaggering with Atlanta rappers the next, “Aerosol Can” is more than fitting — and, hell, perhaps a sign that he will take over 2014, too. Hear the new Major Lazer track after the jump.
