Lauryn Hill Covers The Beatles’ “Something” For ‘Letterman’: Watch
Lauryn Hill covered The Beatles‘ “Something” to close out Late Show with David Letterman‘s “Beatles Week” last night (February 8). Two guitarists and a trio of backup singers helped flesh out the George Harrison-penned pop standard into a bluesier rendition, as a familiar side to Hill resurfaced for the first time in years.
The songs that bracketed Hill’s 2013 prison term, “Neurotic Society Compulsory Mix” and “Consumerism,” were dissonant, rapidfire, free-form raps taking aim at greed, materialism and a “vampire paradigm,” jarring reminders of her talents and need to say something. The Miseducation icon hasn’t tackled a song as straightforward and sentimental as “Something” since, well, her debut. Breakout hit “Doo Wop (That Thing)” comes to mind, despite even the muted vocals, if only because she appears at ease. The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the Beatles, tonight at 8 p.m. EST; Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Annie Lennox are among its listed performers. For now, watch Hill tackle “Something” up top, then weigh in on her performance at the comments.
