On “I Wish We Were Leaving,” a song off Bright Light Bright Light‘s upcoming, same-titled EP (out April 7), Rod Thomas brings us another lyrical tale of a relationship that’s taken an irreversible turn. Except this time he has one Elton John on board to share the vocal duties. The pair-up came about once Sir Elt rang up Rod to praise the latter’s debut album, Make Me Believe In Hope.

“From then I kept hearing his voice on the track,” Thomas tells The Guardian. “In time I played him ‘I Wish We Were Leaving’ and he added his vocals. Although it wasn’t written as a duet, I love that his voice taking lead in the second verse is a reminder that every relationship has two sides and two voices.”

The result is at once both mournful and optimistic. Hear Bright Light Bright Light and Elton John make beautifully sad music together below.
