Charli XCX Debuts New Song “Breaking Up” At SXSW: Watch

All signs indicate Charli XCX is making a concerted effort to trade in the bubbly, squiggly, Tumblr-wave sonics on which she has built her reputation in exchange for rock elements. Which really isn’t that surprising, because let’s be honest, Icona Pop‘s “I Love It” is really a punk song disguised as club pop. But even more overtly, she’s traveling with a guitar-bass-drums band, says her sophomore album is punk-influenced and released this thrashing little song.

And now, after revealing that she linked up with Weezer‘s Rivers Cuomo for her True Romance follow-up, Charli unveiled the strutting rocker “Breaking Up” at SXSW. It’s all peppy angst, with crunchy guitars and a yell-at-your-ex refrain of “Everything is wrong with you / So breaking up was easy to do,” all of which certainly seems to suggest it has Cuomo’s fingerprints on it.

Check it out up top.
