Sia’s “Chandelier”: Listen To Her New Song

Sia‘s “Chandelier” has premiered, and it’s every bit the soaring anthem we expected it would be based on that tantalizing preview from last week. You can hear the influence big pop has had on her sound after she’s spent the last few years writing for the likes of Rihanna and Beyonce, with cavernous percussion and massive orchestral instrumentation thrown into the chorus like it was no big thing. But the whole thing is distinctly Sia — vocally, the way she goes from the opening mumbled verse to the breathtaking acrobatics on the chorus (specifically the title word), it’s the sort of thing that few performers could replicate.

With lyrics like “1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3 drink” and “Keep my glass full until morning light / ‘Cause I’m just holding on for tonight,” “Chandelier” is similar to Kendrick Lamar‘s “Swimming Pools (Drank)” in that it’s a party song about the existential dread that makes us want to party (and like “Swimming Pools,” it will no doubt be misinterpreted).

Sia co-wrote the song with Jesse Shatkin, and he co-produced it along with Greg Kurstin. Hear it below.
