Kanye West & Future Twist The Trophy Wife Concept On “I Won”: Listen

Kanye West and Future each are engaged to, and have procreated with, a famous, lovely lady. In fact, Kim Kardashian and Ciara are arguably more famous than their respective mates, so they most certainly do not fit the old “trophy wife” label. They have agency. The two rappers decided to celebrate their soon-to-be-wives on Future’s Honest cut “I Won” by taking on the dicey proposition of reappropriating that retro women-as-conquests label. By having the honor of being with such accomplished, beautiful women, they are victorious in life, hence the trophy.

It’s a nice thought, I suppose, although there’s still something slightly off-putting about it, if only because so many morons will fail to grasp their updated spin on the stereotype — and that artwork up there surely won’t help. But their hearts seem to be in the right place.

Anyway, onto the song! The Metro Boomin-produced cut is mainly remarkable because Kanye’s verse is dripping with specificity: he tributes the other members of the Kardashian clan by name, riffs on the “Bound 2” video and disses Kim’s exes (“I made it over NBA [Kris Humphries], NFL players [Reggie Bush], so every time I score it’s like the Super Bowl”).
